I will do so when my mind feels like it wants to make one; I prefer not to force myself to do something unless I have no other choice, as I could be missing out on other interesting things. I've been wanting to make one, and likely have 15 revisions of possible bases that I've gone nowhere with over the past week, so it's just a matter of time before I'm happy with what I have enough to start making more progress on one
I agree it's really tricky to get a nice starscape. If you're up for it, we could collab on one some time. I have tons of attempts as well This one does seem to be the most realistic one I've seen yet!
I've been able to make a little progress on one of them that I have, but the devil is in the details when making them. It's really an unstructured mess - I have at least nine transforms sprawled about in what I'm working on, and the one that is the smallest is the one that has the most control over the shape at the moment (i.e dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/94… ).
Yep, this is the one I was referring to; I didn't link it because I didn't want to just spam my artwork all around the place. Maybe it's a bit more of an explosion than a nebula...
Anyway, I've wanted to make another nebula for a while, but they're /really/ hard (and time-consuming) to make, despite my ability to stylistically accomplish them: it's absurdly easy to make the fractal patterns visible in the cloud structure, and the colors are incredibly hard to get spread out in a reasonable way. The colors alone on this took at least six hours, and the structure of the fractal was something I was working off and on for roughly a week.
Fractals aren't easy to make, there are a good many days where I just can't get anything working. It took me over a year to work on the style I currently am using, and I'm still learning how things work together to this day.
I do intend to release some tutorials in the near future (intro to apo / strategies for making abstracts), the latter of which should give some information on how to go about making something like it if you are interested in pursuing it again at some point in the future ;D
